The Big Things are the Small Things

Georgia and I had a girl's day out this past week. Because a day together would never be complete without a trip to a bookstore, we visited Barnes and Noble. G had a couple of gift cards to spend and we both needed (not wanted, NEEDED) to stock up on some new reading material. One of my favorite areas in the store is the stationary section. I love looking at all of the pens, journals, cards, and albums. It's the nerd in me...I can't help it. While perusing all of the items, a specific journal caught my eye. The title was "Like Mother, Like Daughter ~ A Discovery Journal for the Two of Us." The book featured fun prompts for mother & daughter to answer. Questions as simple as favorite movies and songs to more thought provoking questions such as "Who should play you in a movie about your life, who should play me?" Etc. After showing it to Georgia and having her say, "Mom, really?" I knew I had to include it in my purchases. We are now on page 24 of the book and we have both enjoyed answering the questions. Some answers are predictable and some are a surprise. I never, ever regret time spent with my daughter. Too often, however, that time spent together is not as productive as it should be. She may be talking away while I am only half listening as I cook or clean. Or I may be wanting to talk to her but she is in the middle of watching a movie or texting someone. We are physically spending time together, but emotionally we are not present. Spending ten-fifteen minutes each day discussing the topics in this book has given us something to look forward to. I love learning new things about my daughter and she has enjoyed it, too. Who knows? In years to come, this may be a treasure to my future grand kids and great grand-kids. I like to think so anyway.
